      About the artist

      Duane Michals

Duane Michals was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania in 1932, and he received a BA from the University of Denver in 1953. After serving in the Army and working as a graphic designer, he began to make photographs in 1958 while traveling in the Soviet Union. It was with these pictures that Michals made his first book--three versions each with a different cover--and thus he forged an eternal love affair between the camera and the page. In 1970 Duane Michals installed a solo show at Museum of Modern Art in New York entitled STORIES with his signature approach to serial pictures that will be included as well in his forthcoming 2014 retrospective at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

Super well organized and i felt very welcome from the moment i stepped in the door. it was so nice to see the artist duane michals in such a small intimate setting and he was so charming to listen to. the gertrude team kept him "in line" so that he didn´t go off topic too much and i thought there was a perfect balance. i really liked that everyone was encouraged to ask questions and that we could hang out and talk a little after the artist left. thanks again.

A brilliant performance, with so many gems dropped along the way not just for photographers ("it's in the negative") but for art collectors as well. nothing is more valuable than the artist's own words - it is the primary source for all of us c riley
