How do you know what you like? How do you know what's good? Is there a difference?

Part 1: "The Intelligent Collector" - Intro to Collecting 101

Collecting contemporary art is a passion, some say an obsession. What are some of the key points in starting to collect? What are some of the pitfalls easy to avoid with a few simple rules of engagement? Why collecting contemporary is unlike collecting anything else? What are artists doing today that exemplifies the times in which we live, and why that's an important consideration when buying....

Join Gertrude's first Salon with Sue Stoffel to discuss these and many other questions amidst her remarkable collection. Through this and the entire Emerging Art Collector Series, Sue will share her extensive experience, her journey through the world of art and her passion for collecting. This Salon series will certainly educate and inspire our community. More on Sue and her collection below.

    Ticket includes:

    • discussion with Sue at her residence
    • tour of the collection

The salon was wonderful, and pablo did a great job leading the event and inspiring the conversation. bravo!

Sue is enormously knowledgeable. it was an honor to be in her home and hear her speak so passionately about this world. her insight on buying work the year in which it was made will always stay with me. also her philosophy on acquisitions, which she calls the head, heart, hand continuum is brilliant!

What an incredible first experience with gertrude! i absolutely plan on attending additional salons in the future. i loved the small group format and the home setting. i will recommend this to my friends. great date idea too ;) i think the host did a wonderful job and was incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. by far one of the more unique experiences i've had in ny. i can't wait to join for another one.

This was my first salon, and i thoroughly enjoyed it. the atmosphere was intimate and comfortable, and the insight provided by sue was invaluable. i've since signed up for my next salon!

I think there could be an opportunity for gertrude to add a small ritual in the beginning of each session -- something to tie all gertrude salons together, and to bond everybody to the community. there's a lot that's been written about the role of ritual in building community (think frat initiation, but less humiliating, less alcohol... actually that's a terrible example, but i think you get my point).
